Academic Writing - writing and publishing scientific papers

Writing papers in English is difficult. There are many points to be considered ranging from the dilemmas of English grammatical usage, e.g. should you use “is” or “are” with data, to questions of style: why do so many papers start with “A number of studies have shown ..” and what is wrong with it?

Whether you have never written a paper before, are out of practice, or are not confident in your English ability, this course will make the task of writing easier. By finding out how to avoidthe common mistakes in English grammar, by understanding how to present your work in a precise, clear and logical fashion and by learning the language to do so, the writing process will become less laborious. This is good news, also for the reader, who is equally as important as the writer: straightforward writing is easy to understand. And if your writing is easy to understand, your message will have more impact.

Contents The course covers:

  • general and tricky grammar pointsstyle
  • vocabulary
  • punctuation (the Curse of the Comma)
  • text organization
  • how to review your text.

Target group The target group is researchers, who have to present papers at international conferences and who wish to publish papers in Englishlanguage journals.

The course is run in English, so an intermediate or above level of English is required.

Format Teaching is in a classroom setting with written exercises to practice general points and common problem areas. Participants will have the opportunity to work with their own material and to receive individual feedback.

Course facilitator
